Mahika Kala Environmental Policy

The protection of the environment and the natural world is a core element to our business model and existence. The environment is considered in every action we take but we are always striving to do better.

We are already committed to:

  • Using only the highest quality natural plant dyes and plant fibres. We will never use oil derived fabrics like polyester or toxic chemical dyes.

  • Being responsible for all waste. We currently only use packaging made in the UK from 100% recycled and biodegradable paperboard - absolutely no plastic. Any fabric waste is carefully disposed of with currently over 70% of offcuts sold to customers or local projects including schools and craft centres.

  • Working with artisans who are paid the fair living wage. We work with local artisans in Rajasthan who are paid the living wage.

  • Donating to reforestation and female empowerment projects via treesisters.org depending on profits. As of 2023 we have planted 2352 trees!

  • Keeping electric use low by sharing a studio with other creative makers and collectively keeping track of usage.

  • Cycling to work where possible.

We aim to:

  • Empower all people connected to MAHIKA KALA including all Bristol staff and Indian staff to reduce waste of fabric and any plastic packaging. Further reducing our wastage is key to our environmental aims, We aim to have 100% of fabric waste reused or recycled.

  • Offset carbon emissions from travelling to and from trading at markets and festivals. We would like to understand and analyse our carbon footprint and make a 10% carbon reduction over the next 3 years.
