Mahika Kala Environmental Policy
At Mahika Kala, environmental care is not just a consideration, itβs a foundation. We are a slow fashion business rooted in natural processes, conscious production, and deep respect for people and planet. Sustainability shapes every decision we make, and while weβre proud of how far weβve come, we know that true responsibility is an ongoing commitment.
Our Ongoing Commitments
Natural Materials Only
We work exclusively with high-quality, plant-based fabrics and botanical dyes. Our garments are made without synthetic fibres, plastic-based materials, or chemical dyeing processes. Every piece is created with minimal environmental impact and designed to return gently to the earth at the end of its life.
Plastic-Free, Recyclable Packaging
All of our packaging is made in the UK from 100% recycled and biodegradable paperboard. We use no plastic in our shipping or presentation materials, and we continue to evaluate our suppliers to ensure full alignment with our zero-waste values.
Minimising Fabric Waste
Over 70% of our fabric offcuts are currently reused, sold, or donated to schools, community groups, and creative projects. Remaining scraps are either repurposed or responsibly recycled. We are steadily working toward 100% diversion of textile waste from landfill.
Ethical Artisan Partnerships
We collaborate with skilled artisans in Rajasthan who are paid a fair living wage. We maintain open, ongoing dialogue with our partners and uphold strong standards for workplace safety, dignity, and cultural preservation.
Giving Back to People and Planet
Through our long-standing partnership with TreeSisters.org, we donate to global reforestation and women-led climate action. As of early 2025, weβve helped plant 2,352 trees, and will continue growing this impact through profit-based donations. We also made donations to the flood relief in Pakistan and Black Lives Matter organisations in 2024 and donations to aid in Gaza in 2025.
Low-Impact Studio Practices
We share our Bristol-based studio with other creative makers to reduce overall energy use. We also aim to commute by bike or public transport whenever possible, and we continually monitor our electricity usage and emissions from operations.
Our goals
Achieve 100% Fabric Waste Diversion
Our goal is for all offcuts and textile remnants to be reused, recycled, or repurposed by the end of 2025 keeping our materials in circulation and out of waste streams.
Launch a Repair & Take-Back Programme
We aim to pilot a customer repair and take-back scheme in 2026 to extend the life of our garments and support circular fashion practices. This will initially roll out for UK-based customers.
Conduct a Carbon Footprint Audit
We plan to measure the carbon footprint of our operations, including shipping, travel to markets, and studio usage. Based on the results, we will set clear carbon reduction targets for 2026 and beyond.
Eliminate All Synthetic Packaging from Supply Chain
By the end of 2025, we aim to ensure that not only our packaging but also all supplier and shipping materials are completely plastic-free and fully recyclable or compostable.
Empower Our Team & Community
We are committed to sharing knowledge and tools with our staff, collaborators, and customers to support low-waste habits, conscious fashion choices, and a more sustainable lifestyle. We will host seasonal workshops, share resources, and maintain transparency in our environmental progress.
